jane birkin

in 1984, the singer/actress/model jane birkin unknowingly gave the world one of the most adored, and desired bags of a life time. on a flight from paris to london she found herself seated next to Hermès ceo jean-louis dumas. rummaging through her Hermès date book a bunch of papers fell out of it, annoyed, she expressed her irritation to dumas. dumas asked her for the agenda, and a few weeks later he sent it to her home with a pocket sewn in the back (since then it has become standard in all). a short while after birkin met with dumas and explained her difficulty in finding the perfect leather weekend bag. ms. birkin described all the elements she found desirable and necessary in the perfect sac to take with her on short travels. dumas took note of these key desirable elements, and put her ideas to work. a few weeks later another Hermès gift arrived at her home. this gift became known as the birkin bag.
