its been a long time baby..

i am noticing alot of trends that seem to be directing towards those of the 1930's during the great depression. this is probably because we are in a recession-obviously. take note of the longer length skirts, the higher waists, similar accessories, prominent soldiers, red nails and lips, the use of clutch handbags, small hats, blazers...to name some.

lexyrose-contradicting clothing

talkingheads.lex
i've gathered images of myself to analyze all the different personalities my style expresses. im trying to find a uniform language that my style expresses or consists of- beneath all of the contradicting characters i tend to express. from classic, to funky, - i am constantly switching inspirations that help me pick my look of the day. my new goal is to take a photograph, daily, of the clothing i wear. i used to photograph myself everyday on my mac ?(which is where alot of these images have come from). these pictures are of me throughout the past 5yrs, yes i am skinnier at times--dan, but with age, at times, comes weight, along with knowledge., and learning to except one's for and dressing for one's figure. anyway's if you see a common look throughout all my contradicting styles please let me know.. today is the first day of a new fashion period for me, - i will keep you posted on my style. (i tend to think that it is very narcissistic to do --but personal style is very inspirational and interesting for others--this is not about me it's for fashion..i swear). stay tuned....

hello dolly?

i tend to be drawn towards girly, childlike forms of art (at times gruesome/ disturbing). today i cam across the work of nina pandolfo. Aos Nossos Olhos, is the name of this series. these doll like sculptures are made of resin, cloth, and latex. how could one resist the large eyes, the pink (other colored punkish doll hair) hair..the braids, dyed hair, and haunted child like feel remind me luella bartley's fall 09 collection (that just showed yesterday in london).

divine: "the dutchess"-oscar for best costume design

michael o'connor gets the award for best costume design. o'connor designed the costumes after careful research. he examined portraits of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire as well as books, patterns, and accessories, of 18th century fashion.o'connor successfully recreated one of the most glamorous trend-setting woman of history, georgianna (the dutchess of devonshire), carefully paying attention to the colors used, the sahpes of garments, and knightley herself. i loved the film and find the wardrobe to be breathtaking. o'connor reveals his secrets in elle magazine, as well as his favorite look from the film.

prescription pieces...dr. mizrahi's recessionista remedies

shocking ? at first i looked at isaac mizrahi's fall 09 collection and thought of a united colors of benetton add from the 90's, the next thought- surrealism. elsa schiaparelli is clearly an influence on this collection. a combination of fashion and art. isaac plays up pieces (the bag in to hat), as schiaparelli turned a shoe in to a bag; a play on fashion, not only providing us not only with an object of fashion but also a bit of a laugh. after, going back through the collection i found that this is just what the doctor ordered (ha so cheesy), mizrahi said that the collection was to make people happy at times like this using elements that are comforting to him:glitter and color (to name some of them). the pieces were created to provide a "smile" with names like 'xanaxer' and 'cosy'- aww isaac you're so thoughtful.
the pieces were bright in color, textures and shapes of garments nicely complemented one another. i particularly love the cut and fabric of the black dress.

in proenza paradise

proenza schouler's fall 09 collection is a nice mixture of masculine shapes translated in to feminine garments. the juxtaposition of silhouettes, fabrics, and colors are all beautifully thought out. every detail of the garments, constrcution, darts, fabrics, closures, soles of shoes have been meticulously tweaked in to proenza schouler's design language. the boots -gorgeous, remind me a bit of l.l bean's duck boots, - the reinvention (if it is one) i would love to replace for the duck boots i own (although i would probably kill myself trying to pull these off in the rain snow, etc--and i do adore mine). i love the gloves as well. i have so many other collections to look at, and i could go on about this but i must tend to other things.

mixtures of fabrics, colors in the tweed are beautiful. i love the gloves they remind me on snow gloves i wore in the 80's playing in snow.

tres chic, mon cherie (paying respects to ysl)

derek lam's fall 09 collection in ny was a collection of wearable pieces, pulled together for the mature madame. inspired by the late yves saint laurent's apt. i adore heidi slimane's photos of mr. st.laurents apt, taken this past november. looking at them, you feel as though you are y.s.l in his home.
looking at all the familiar objects you see everyday, but, this is your last time being so close to all the objects you know so well, because you will pass on. all of these objects and pieces of art y.s.l has collected are soon to be auctioned off, no longer familair in his apt, like y.s.l himself.
the furs were beautifully done, dark collars contrasting by a lighter bodice jackets- like the contrasting white and black spots of ysl's dog's fur. the draping of jersey and chiffon dirt colored drsses, and skirts, is remniscient of halston's work in the 70's- look at the white glamorous dress and fur ( ysl, also, was at the height of his career in the 70's, mind you). shimmering golds, like the bronze statues st.laurent dazzled his home with.
i love the collection, it speaks chic, and the styling was practical yet very sexy- the black shoes modernized the classic looks. the clothing takes you to a place where some have lived, and others of us dream about living- a place where us recessionista's long for.

i found some images of the 90's that seem to have been inspiration for these collections, or history is just trying to repeat itself-once again. jewelry has diminished and a new tough, female in leather and stretch is soon to be hitting the streets this coming fall.
